Practice as Methodology in/and Asian Performance

Deadline: Friday 14 April 2017

The intimate relationship between theory and practice continues to be one of the central concerns of Asian performance. Concepts, theories and techniques in Asian performance, to a great extent, demonstrate the interlocking mechanism between practice and practice-based knowledge. Within the field of Asian performance, knowledge becomes knowledge only when it is connected to embodied practice. The tactile and kinetic modalities of the body produce perceptible knowledge in performance practice that are systematically defined, theorised and documented in the textual and philosophical domains. In this way, performance, in Asian context, remains as an intermediate entity connecting the inseparable relationship between bodily practice and its theoretical understanding. Performance, therefore, is spatiotemporal discourse, and methodology in itself of a process that will clarify the epistemological ground for practice.

The Asian Performance and Diaspora working group invites papers, workshops, posters and lecture demonstrations addressing, but not limited to, the following broader themes:

  • Practice as methodology
  • Performer Training
  • Diaspora performance
  • Ecological concerns
  • Audience as producers
  • Movement notation
  • Sensory/experiential in theory/practice
  • Technology, tradition and transcultural performance
  • Documentation/ dissemination
